Well, it was inevitable I guess.   After 5 days of sun to start my trip, I woke up this morning to pouring rain.   Ick.

My plan for today was to go on a free walking tour of the city for a couple of hours and then finally, after putting it off for the last week, reach the castle at the top of the city.

Since today was technically my last day in Lisbon (I’m here for 6 hours between 1am and 7am in a couple of days in transit from Porto to Madrid), I wasn’t going to let a little rain get in my way.   After all, I’m from Vancouver.

I got soaked during the walking tour.   I used the small travel umbrella I bought for this trip for the first time and it barely survived the day.   My jeans – soaking wet.   My shoes and socks – soaking wet.

By the end of the tour all I wanted to do was head back to the hostel and change into something dry.   The plans for the rest of the day kind of fell to the wayside as I really, really wasn’t motivated to get up and go back out there.

After lying around for an hour or so, I decided to check out the upcoming weather for both Porto and Madrid.   Rain every day.   Every.   Day.   Ugh.

So, I got my ass up and headed to the mall to do a little shopping.   New waterproof boots – check.   New waterproof pants – check.   130 euros I hadn’t planned on spending – check.

After heading to dinner for a yummy meal of breaded veal sausage with fried egg, rice and fries and a couple glasses of wine, I headed home to get ready for my morning departure to Porto.

    Hey Todd!

I just wanted to thank you for keeping us updated. I just LOVE travelling vicariously through you. Thank you!

Good to hear you're having a great time despite the weather. It's only rain, right? 🙂 Just remember where you are. The worst day travelling is better than the best day at work!

I can't remember if I told you (or if you're even going there), but there are some "free" (by donation) walking tours in Barcelona too. Their website is http://www.runnerbeantours.com/ We took their Old City tour in early December. Very interesting, and our guide (Laura) was quite friendly and knowledgeable. It's a very casual 2 1/2 hours with a quick break in the middle for lunch near some fast food places. If you don't have plans already, have a look.

Keep us updated! You're doing a great job!

    Thanks again!
