When it comes to how I travel, there’s always been one thing in common with all my trips. I always travel in the so called “shoulder” season – the months just before and after the peak summer season.
There’s actually a few reasons I choose to do this.
For one, flights are way cheaper in the off season. The other times I’ve flown from Vancouver into Europe have cost me anywhere between $500 to $900 return. This time around, because I’m flying in the peak season, my two flights are $1300 and $1700.
The second is being able to avoid the crowds. The beauty of traveling in off-peak months is you’re not swarmed by other tourists on their summer vacations. No overflowing airports and no ridiculous lineups to see attractions.
Finally, there’s the weather. I won’t lie, there’s a big part of me that’s dreading traveling in Eastern Europe this coming August when temperatures will climb to 35°C (95°F). It’s just so much nicer in the Spring and Fall when the weather is milder and temperatures cooler.
Now, having said all that, I’m also very aware how immensely lucky I am to be able to travel when and where I want. I don’t have the kind of commitments I would have if I had a wife and kids and I also have a job that thankfully will let me go away for weeks at a time if I want.
So, yeah, seems kind of silly to “dread” traveling in the summer but, hey, all that off peak traveling has got me spoiled!
Anyway, 42 days to go!
